Soooooooo... I managed to do a face plant on my '14. While coming to a stop sign with my visor open I managed to get yellow jackets IN my helmet along with a couple on my neck, stuck in my hooded sweatshirt. When I started getting stung I unknowingly squeezed my front brake harder than intended... the next thing I know I am laying on the road. Luckily, besides some road rash through my sweatshirt and a bruised ego, no major injuries were sustained. ANYWAYS... I am hoping to pick some brains on here. When I laid my bike down I managed to break my speedometer, which killed the entire instrument cluster. I am considering buying the replacement assembly on Bike Bandit and doing it myself, but I don't know where the "brain" of my bike is located. If I replace it myself will I need someone to flash the computer or anything like that? Does anyone have any feedback on how complicated doing this swap myself will be? I consider myself pretty mechanically/electrically inclined, I just haven't had to do any complicated work on this thing since I bought it. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated...

The ECU is under the tank. The instrument cluster is just plug and play. No flashing needed. There are obviously electronics in the cluster but nothing to flash. On your bike the cluster communicates with the ECU by a serial data line.
Not sure of the unbolting required, I’d have to check the manual and look at my bike. It isn’t difficult and a couple members have done it due to crashes or bike drops. It’s just an expensive part.
If you end up needing a wiring diagram, let me know. I can hook you up.

Popgun, are you sure it's a serial data line? I recall there were still 25-30 separate wires going to the meter assembly.

General CB1100 info:
As to combination meter:
*mechanically, it is "trapped" between two plastic covers, top and bottom.
It requires to remove few bolts and screws, clamps; separate these covers to gain inside access
* electrically, there are two electrical connectors (may have to disconnect its printed circuit??). There is a serial communication line that runs from the meter to ECU, and if it is malfunctioning, it may trigger DTC 86-1.
You are pretty mechanically/electrically inclined, so I do not want to hear your complaint

You're right Popgun and peterbaron, there is a serial communication line on '14 and later - for the fuel consumption display.

Section 5 of the service manual says,
Combination Meter sends rear wheel speed sensor info to the ECU
ECU sends High oil temperature signal, Engine speed signal, MIL signal, and Fuel pulse signal (for mileage meter)

Your odometer will start at 0, and from what I know there is no programming it. When I had my cluster replaced it was at 0 when I got the bike back and they just taped the original mileage to the inside of my right side cover over the air filter housing.

I didn't even think of the odometer being off... I guess I need to look into that as well.
Thanks for all the input. Still not sure if I want to mess with it, although I do feel a little better about it now that I've seen the pics and wiring diagrams you all sent.

I wouldn’t even worry about it Rhino, just put the milage on a sticker as mentioned above. If you ever sell it, I would bet NC has provisions for vehicles with actual vs. indicated mileage. Va. does. It’s not uncommon as cars go over 100K or whatever.
You could call the DMV and see if the dealer or police or DMV cv needs to annotate the actual mileage before the swap. You know, an official check.
