I crash tested the Over Racing polished stainless crash bars from Samurider. My riding pals were ribbing me when I installed them because I'd gone decades without scratching a bike. In an unfortunate deer encounter in '15 I found that the protection was amazing. I had some damage to the meter housing, headlight ring and clutch lever, but nothing on the body of the bike received a scratch (went down on the left side). Even the rear turn signal was scratch free. Mr. T. at Samurider was kind enough to offer me a smokin' deal on a set of replacement crash bars.

Bought a set of the Trex crash bars I'm currently waiting on as the city is quite unkind to motorcycles. Wind storm in Chicago was so bad last week that I woke up with my bike knocked over to the left (kickstand side). My CB500-F bars are bent out of shape beyond fixing, left rear turn signal smashed, and my gauges are now askew too. I don't plan on knocking my bike over but this is the 3rd time in my almost 3 years of owning my CB it has been tipped over without me being around to 'help' it. I should have got crash bars years ago, so for anyone that doesn't have a garage and relies on street parking, they're a must. Now I need to get all this stuff fixed because I was trying to be a purist. I'll take function over fashion at this point.

Can anyone confirm that the Trex bars are able to protect the handlebars if tipped over? Pretty sick of replacing handlebars for the 3rd time. I would get Renthals but my Polly Heaters heated grips that are currently installed in my CB500f's won't transfer as the diameter isn't big enough. They're quite necessary to me as driving along Lake Michigan near daily can be pretty cold in the mornings.

Cricket, specialist, that's not good. Is there a way to tie the bike down so it can't blow over?

Cormanus, would putting it on the center stand have been more stable? Given the bike fell on the kickstand side, it's hard for me to believe it could have been more stable.

I don't know, specialist. If it blew over while it was on the kick stand, I would have thought it would either have to have rolled forward so the stand flipped up or the wind was so strong it picked the bike up first. Was it in gear? I suspect it would be harder to move the bike forward if it were on the centre stand, but I'd also worry that it might blow it over to the right where there's nothing but the vertical leg.

When I've taken my bike on a vehicular ferry that travels over pretty rough water, they make you leave it in 1st gear on the kick stand. They then have a webbing strap that had loops that go over the hand grips. They anchor it on both sides, but pull it down to the left so there's a bit of load on the suspension.

That seems to me a pretty secure way to hold the bike, although if you could lash it down on the centre stand the way people do on trailers, that ought to hold it.

It's bloody windy if it blew the bike over on the stand.

It was definitely in neutral so the 'moving forward' element could have certainly occurred. Those tips for the ferry could prove quite vital as I'm taking a ferry across lake Michigan next month. I'll remember those tips as id hate to have anything happen on a trek like that.

The wind storm was unpredictable but putting it in first gear when something like that is forecasted could help.

I suspect getting into the habit of always parking the bike in 1st might be a good idea. I confess I seldom do it.

I always park my bike in gear outdoors in the weather and have never had an issue.

Corm/Kenny, parked my bike downtown in Chicago and put it in first this morning. Gonna start getting in the habit of that to avoid any more mishaps my bike loves to get into. Thanks for the tips guys!

I'm gonna order a set of OEM guards from Honda, been putting it off. Not really worried about what they can do in a crash, but just dropping the bike can hole the case and/or bash the crankshaft. They would not make contact with the covers due to design.

About 165 bucks shipped from bikebandit.com, best deal I could find. Not bad.

Thanks for the tip on price. That is the best. Samurider quoted me 170 shipped.
