ecu/knee pads
#1

two quick questions for my 2017 EX;

suggestions for knee pads for either side of my gas tank that actually look like they were made for the tank?

where under the seat is the ecu module located?

Thank You--in advance

I used the TechSpec Gripster Tank Grips For Honda CB1100 '13-'17 ...

I utilized only the side tank grips. It is a modern look, and not classy like those on the Triumph Bonneville. However, they worked really well when it mattered.

Hi southwend, in answer to your query here's where the ecu is mounted under the tank directly above the fuel injectors in a separate plastic sub-frame;

The ecu can be seen at the lower end of the two foam rubber pieces and is the black plastic unit with the black and the white multi pole connectors and the barcode sticker on it.
As you can see the tank, fuel hose ( with quick connector ), overflow/vent hose and fuelpump wiring has to be removed to gain access to it.

Thanks PB, the snow is finally all shoveled Big Grin Big Grin
A few years ago one of the members posted a pattern for gas tank knee pads which I downloaded and printed. I glued the paper pattern to stiffer cardboard so it would be easier to handle and use.
I ordered two black magnetic sheets from Mag-Knight, traced the pattern, and carefully cut them out. They popped right into place and never move, but are easily removed if needed.

I never heard of tank grips till I started track days / racing. Do you all decelerate that hard on the street?

The TechSpec Gripster was very useful at freeway speeds against a stiff headwind.

If you happen by chance to experience a dramatic accelerated event, they help too.

I put them on more for a retro look than any real use.
I've since installed fork gaiters - for the look and also tube protection.

Southwind, there are several different ways you can do the tank pads, depending on what you like. I believe the pattern Rocky mentioned is here: http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=11249 .

TechSpec precut pads for 2013-2017 CB can be found here: https://techspec-usa.com/products/gripst...grips.html . One of the supposed benefits of the TechSpec is that the adhesive on the back is peel off and re-position/re apply, or peel off/leave off without leaving adhesive residue behind. TechSpec also sells the material un cut, so you can use whatever pattern you like to create your own pads. "Universal" Honda pads are also offered at TechSpec, and no brand universal on EBay.

The last option that comes to mind is to use the pattern Rocky used, or make your own pattern, then take the pattern to an automotive window tint shop. Most of these shops now do "Clear Bra" paint protection film on cars as well. The shop could then use your pattern to cut and apply clear paint protection film to your tank. Sometimes these shops will say they can cut the film to custom fit while it is on the vehicle, but that risks cutting into the paint, depending on the skill of the technician. So, the only way I would do the clear film option is if it is pre cut from a pattern.
