Rear shock recommendation please
#1

ok, need a recommendation: what's a good aftermarket rear shock? I don't ride hard- never scrape foot pegs anymore. I got Road Pilot tires and now am looking for a similar upgrade to rear shocks- thanks

I have Ikon 7610-1507 on my 2014 Deluxe.

Ikon shocks were originally designed by Koni. When Koni got out of the motorcycle shock business they sold the rights to Ikon who now manufacture them in Australia.

FYI; I have Race Tech springs up front.

So, how would rate the improvement on both the front & rears? If any- sometimes those mods don't really help much- sometimes they help a lot

Probably depends on how much you weigh as much as anything else.

I'm 205#, plus ATGATT. I installed Ohlins shocks on the rear, and Race-tech in front. The Ohlins were on sale for half-price at year-end in 2015.

I certainly didn't go "down" in suspension, but the changes are mostly psychological...and expensive. I constantly look for bumps to test things out, as opposed to avoiding them. The rear seems better than the front. Very happy with it. I think I have eliminated the diving effect of braking, unless I'm mis-remembering how bad it was. ;-) I mean, for almost $1,000 you would expect me to say good things...right?!

The bike never seem particularly unsettled before the changes.

Olyrider, I'm pretty sure it's not psychological. Confused The stock shocks are punishing if you are within certain weight ranges. You may be the perfect weight for the OEM shocks but trust me, Ohlins are 100% better than OEM. I installed Ohlins on my then new 1994 BMW R1100RS and it was sort of an epiphany. Frost heaves, pot holes, and expansion joints were smoothed out to the point of being non existent. I'm just about ready to order the ones for the 2013 CB1100 and can't wait. I hope it is as dramatic a change as on the BMW. Granted I'm just doing the back on the CB and on the beemer it was both ends. Single shock on front and single shock on rear.....

A suspension upgrade will transform your sleepy CB into a well mannered quasi super bike.
This was the best mod I did to my CB1100.
The Michelin Pilot Road tires also improved the handling significantly.
I like to get sporty in the canyons of So Cal, nothing extreme, but a good quick pace is my style.
You will not realize how "average" the stock CB suspension is until you upgrade and tune it to your riding style.
While Ohlin's are considered by many as the holy grail of shocks, in my humble opinion you get more bang for your buck with Ikon.

I am very happy with the IKON shocks on my 13 CB1100 and I too have Race Tech springs in front which helped with the front end issues.

I used Ohlins on my Sportster. I tried Ikons on my Nighthawk 750 and they were much the same as stock even though I gave them my weight and everything. The Ohlins actually moved! LOL.

I put Progressive Suspension rear shocks on my Nighthawk 750 ..may as well be stock. I had Traxxion Dynamics AK 20 cartridge fork kit and Hyperco rear spring on my Gen 1 FZ-1 and I couldn't tell any diff on it either. The only thing all that transformed was a thinner wallet for me. I personally am not wasting any more money on suspension mods for my bikes.

*** not intimating it would be a waste for others, just a waste for me

I installed fully adjustable Ohlins in the rear and Ohlins inserts in the front. I really need to upgrade the front springs. I have the preload maxed and it is just barely in the range of sag I was going for. I also have a front fork brace. I have Pirelli Angel GT's. I had to go a size wider for our 18" wheels because it was all they made. I ride hard on lots of twisty mountain roads. Upgrading the suspension made an incredible difference. Having the suspension properly set for sag and riding conditions made the bike handle like something else completely. The bike is much more stable cornering and at highway speeds.

I just ordered some 17" wheels. They are lighter, wider, and I will have access to more sport tire choices. Looking forward to getting those on.

If you are upgrading your suspension it is worth working with someone that can help you get the correct springs for your weight.
