The other manufactures sort of have followed suit in a way. Most of the 600s haven't seen major updates in almost a decade, short of some component changes and styling refreshes. I'd guess that most are just happy to get more out of their already paid off tooling and the just let the bikes die when they truly become financially nonsensical.
As a side note, it sucks that the new Fireblade does appear to be another in-line 4 (and a bit of a lame duck at that). I had my fingers crossed for a new RVF1000 and would have put down a deposit as soon as it was announced.
