New CB1000R get tank dented day one.

You might laugh but I use EIGHT straps on my bikes when trailering and have done 1200 mile trips with no problem. Always check the straps after say 5 to 10 miles after loading. The young dude at the dealership (who, at the beginning, told me he was one of the owners!) refused to consider that it was anything but my responsibility to fix. Legally it made be hard to get them to pony up. However, from the practical side of things it was his fault. When I sold the Honda Africa Twin we strapped it to the trailer using ratchet straps around the fork down to the floor of the trailer. The new owner then drove from Roanoke Va to Raliegh NC without incident. I used this same method once the West Virginia dealer's 'expert' method failed on my new CB1000R.

That is their position.
In my view if that young man continues to make decisions, give advise, and take actions on issues for which he has not the required knowledge and experience then he is going to get someone hurt one day.

The new tank is $1,100.00 retail. The dealer in Roanoke said that my price was around $780.00. Paintless dent removal should be a lot less that those numbers

Difficult but not impossible for a guy who knows what he's doing. Worst that can happen is you get a guy to look at it and he says no. The guy I've used for years has been able to tell me if he can or can't do a job. He won't touch it if he doesn't think it will produce a good result.

That does suck. Sorry to see something like that happen to your new baby! Nothing that can't be fixed though. If the dealer loaded it, it would seem that they would be on the hook for it, or at least a negotiable amount of repair.

Yup the straps should go straight to the floor. Taking them outside of the trailer meant that the fork was compressed very little. First bump and over she goes. Plus the hooks on the ends of the ratchet straps where hooked over the bottom edge of the trailer's side walls/bottom. They need to be inside O-rings or D-rings etc...
I suppose we all learn that at some point we don't know as much as we thought we did. The young man at the dealerships is going to learn this the right-way or the hard-way. I hope no one gets hurt before he does.

That's a tough one activedirt. Hopefully dent removal will work. Nothing sucks more than spending a bunch of money fixing something you just spent a bunch of money on.

But please do bring it to the rally, dent or no, we'd all love to see it and you of course.

That is a beautiful bike! Sorry to see what happened.

When I dented my almost new CB tank I replaced it as I couldn’t stand the dent. Luckily I got a takeoff from a forum member pretty cheap. He did the kit from Samurider and didn’t need it.

Thanks for sharing that adventure with us, indeed a lovely looking machine.
The paint seemed to have held up very well under the circumstances and worth having an expert look at as some others have suggested.
The dealer's opinion is just that, no more, worth asking someone with some legal experience.

Had no idea what a "motorcycle harness was so i looked it up and it may be useful in some cases however i cannot see an advantage in using it on the cb1000r, it has perfect handlebars etc to tie off to which you know very well, on top of that the throttle handle on the cb1000r is an electronic one, it is simply not designed to support forces in the way this harness uses it's two loops, and i can see how the stop positions ( low revs and pulling the tube off the handle ) can be damaged by forcing them the wrong way.
The next problem is how far the support angles are away from the best angle to counter the sideways forces in a corner, they become too steep to do a meaningful sideways hold on the bike.
And you can't beat "d"rings for supportThumbs Up

So what actually happened, did the bottom hook free itself?

That blows.

I've driven countless bikes in trucks and trailers with just a tie down on each side of the handlebar...and gone around turns fast enough to slide the back tire of the bikes around. Stable as a rock.

If they don't want responsibility of a bike falling over they need to stop being the one to 'secure' the bike- that simple.

I'm a stubborn SOB- they would pay for the tank sooner or later...and I would make it crystal clear on the first phone call how I felt, how they are responsible, and how I would bury them in every possible way if they tried to screw me over.

Ask them what their reputation and time are worth.

Yup the hooks on the ratchet straps came loose. There is no way they were going to hold. Bumpy back roads of otherwise very lovely WV.

Sorry you had that happen with such a beautiful bike. A buddy needed to have his K1600GTL taken to a dealer for work, so he used the roadside assistance from his BMW MOA membership. They sent a truck. This is how his bike showed up at the dealer. $8k worth of damage. And this was a towing company specifically contracted to move motorcycles.



Hope you're able to get that dent removed easily. Enjoy the bike!

You could try filing against the dealer in small claims court, in the city where they are located. There is usually somewhere around a $35 filing fee, and the jurisdiction judgement limit is usually 5K. You represent yourself, and tell your side, supported by any pictures repair estimates etc. Since it is a brand new bike, and a representative of the dealer was the one who incorrectly strapped it down, for what a new tank costs I would give it a shot.
