Battery Charger
#21
The NOCO Genius is basically a repackaged CTEK MUS4.3, probably the best charger ever for motorcycles and other small engine batteries. Multi desulfation and recovery modes, variable rate, fully automatic pulse charging, and float battery maintenance all built into a small, durable unit that is also weatherproof. I have about a dozen of them that I move around betwen my bikes, cars, and farm tractor.

Hmm, so there definitely is some cool new stuff out there. I don't remember having temperature-dependent desulfation and over/under-charge protection technology around when I purchased my original tender (though maybe I'm wrong). Still, I'm not sure I can convince myself that it's anything worth buying, as I've been getting pretty good lifespans out of my batteries with the Tender. We'll see...I'm quite surprised how often I find a hundred bucks burning a hole in my pocket.

I've owned the original Deltran Battery tenders since the mid 1990s, back when the charging leads had Molex style connectors, before they went to SAE.

The blasted things still work 20 yesrs later, but one thing I noticed is that they do not sufficiently "exercise" the battery by varying the voltage and charge current as a pulse or frequency charger does. This is more important on AGM and gel cell batteries which need this fluctuating charge to work their best.

I ended up with a bunch of dead $100-$175 batteries in my bikes as a result.

The later Deltran BT "Plus" models have the latest charging algorithms and software to deal with this better, so I gave away my old ones to friends and neighbors.

Still think the CTEK chargers are the best.

I've been using a Schumacher from Walmart, works well for the cars and bikes. Noticed that Costco carried a Battery Tender model so you may want to check the next time you stock up on toilet paper and essentials.

In a past life I used to sell these trickle chargers. The optimate is the original and the best. Once this item became popular many copies became available, most made in China and the failure rate was tremendous. The copies have probably improved over the years but the Optimate is still the one to buy. I've got the mark 1 model which must be 20 years old and it is still giving good service.

I just purchased the [url=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q3CM2QY/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=1944687602&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000P23HZS&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=141X47ZPCDYXCYX3T7XY]BatteryMINDer Model 1510. I decided to go with a unit that has a temperature sensor and pulse desulfation. I guess time will tell if it was a good decision.
