Oil explosion

Sorry for the hyperbole, but I didn't see it happen, but there was fairly obviously oil to the front/left front of the motorcycle. My initial guess was that my oil filter was damaged and leaking oil (that was 2 days ago) and I quite handily removed and threw away the naughty filter and prefilled and installed the new one.
Now the only reason for this thread is that usually when a rhing like this happens, either someone I know or somebody smarter can tell me WHY.
THAT is all, folks. I actually had 0 great guesses on this one.

The filter by now (or nowish) had been there a while, and my oil changes lately, have been because I noticed that this motorcycle was suffering and there's a chance last time I forgot to change the filter (but I doubt it).
It's very hot in Hawaii, and I think that hurts my motorcycles almost as much as it does me!!

No issues with my 2014 standard for over 12,000 miles at temps up to 114F this summer. Las Vegas had 150 days this year of 100F or more

1. No, k&n.
2. No, tight, I needed a strap wrench to get it removed.
3. No, although I expected to find one, I did not. But I did put on a fresh filter with nearly 2 qts. Of oil and so far all seems ok.

I suspect the answer to the problem lies in your answer to question 1. At least 4 members of this forum that I can think of have had problems with K&N filters leaking through the removal nut at the front of the filter. K&N has issued a recall for certain of its filters.

Seems you are a lucky guy, owning a cb1100, living in hawaii and finding out a serious problem the safest way possible,i really hope you watch some of the video's Cormanus pointed out, have a beer, you deserve it after posting your experience and i thank you for doing so.

I had thought these filters would have all been recalled/taken off the shelf.

Someone i know has just put a chromed version of these k&n's on his HD, i did warn him profusely but he has faith in the shiny thing.....................I just hope he is right.

MAX. Thank you. Now this reply is for everyone and not just you, but I am not a brand guy. I own only 1 Honda (I had another 2005-2006, but an old lady unintentionally tried to kill me), I've had 2 Triumphs (recently sold 1), one BMW in my stable, and that is all (I own 3 bikes still).
The part where it becomes touch and go is when I involve family. My mom wants to kill me because I "hate" Harley Davidson. But I DON'T. The truth is that although I am terrible at math, I do know that HDs are known for leaking oil. And I went out of my way to determine that by all measurements I can find, my Honda is BETTER than any HD in my league. Also (and finally since war is still real and constant) I test rode a harley the day after I test rode a Triumph and the clear winner was the trumpet!!
Before I abandon this ill gotten gain, does anyone else lube their chain? Tension?

I wouldn't necessarily cling to the notion that Harleys leak oil. They're fine bikes, though some of us may prefer other styles and brands.

Try sticking to OE Honda filters in the future and I bet you'll have no further issues.

Chain lubrication, as most know the chain is already lubricated for it's life with grease from the factory.

What you need to lubricate is the o rings between the link cheeks and the rollers on the links.
Cleaning with kerosene does a wonderful job and the kero needs to evaporate for a day before oiling should be done.

Honda recommends oil up to sae90, so i use hypoid sae 90 ( because it is thick and sticks therefore better ) mixed with petrol ( add 150% ) and use a small brush to smear the mixture on the inside of the chain so the centrifugal force moves it to the outside when the wheel rotates and coat the o rings and rollers with it and rotate the wheel initially by hand and then start the engine on the centerstand to motivate the mixture to " wick " in between all the moving parts.
once that is done i leave it for a day to let the petrol evaporate and the oil to settle, if you ride straight away the mixture will simply fling off and defeat the purpose as i found out.

O or X rings without lubrication will wear much faster and for that reason i also lube the front and rear bearing seals on both shafts/bushings of the wheels.
Too much oil will of course attract dirt so the idea is to do this regularly and watch the chain for dryness.

Every body has their own way of lubrication and some may just spray some lube on the chain and be done with it and that's fine, it's his chain but by talking about our methods we may learn something from each other
