Squealing Front Brakes Just Before Complete Stop
#1
Forgive me if this has already been discussed but I couldn't find a thread relating to Brake Squeal via the Search Tool menu.

My Canadian 2017 CB1100CAH (EX model in U.S.) has pretty amazing brakes for stopping capability but the fronts begin to squeal/howl just before coming to a complete stop. There is no noise at speeds above 10 mph. Also happens when reversing out of my driveway at low speeds.

The noise is somewhat akin to a Wet Finger rubbing on a Crystal Glass with an almost Bell Like character. It's annoying and embarrassing! Interestingly, if I tap either front rotor when off the bike, it's pretty much just a dull thud with no ringing quality.

Was wondering if this is a common issue and if anyone has found a fix for the problem?

Thanks,

Brake squeal is caused by high frequency vibration of the pads. Not unusual on bikes and cars. To stop it you have to dampen the vibrations. Sometimes with a shim or vibration damper pads or damper spray or liquid grease like stuff. Like Permatex or CRX Disc Brake Quiet.

The other reason brakes squeal is if they are worn out. The wear indicators will rub on the rotors and make noises.

more causes could be a glazed pad or rotor or an accumulation of brake dust. Sometimes I get a squeal in the rear brake and I take an air hose and blow it out and it goes away for awhile

The front brakes on my 2017 CB1100 EX also squeal just before stopping. And the rear wheel never turned freely when I spun it to clean and lube the chain. Lots of excuses from Dealer Service: metal in the pads, dust, etc., but no fixes.

Later the back of the hub of the rear disk turned a light brown. That tells me it was overheating when I was riding. They tried to tell me I must ride with the my foot on the rear brake. I told them that I never ride with my foot on the pedal and seldom use the rear brake.

Honda Canada replaced the rear disk and pads at 3500 kilometers. The dealer told me to use the rear brake more to break in the pads. I tried but found the rear brake mushy. But the wheel did turn more freely for a while. But now it is starting to drag when spun for chain maintenance, and the hub of the new disc is starting to discolour.

I rode more than 35,000 kilometers on my CB500XA without this kind of problem. My riding style and the roads I ride have not changed. This is disappointing for a new motorcycle that costs almost twice as much as my previous CB did.

I never thought of testing it at the end of one of my day long rides.

Mine were letting out a squeak just as I stopped. Only did it for a while after they were cleaned of oil from leaking fork seals.

One of mine squeals. Haven't ever really found out why. Didn't stop when I changed the pads.

Thanks,

O.K. Thanks for all the replies. Since my bike only has 1,700 kilometers on it and the issue has pretty much been there since day one I decided to try altering my riding style a bit.

Today I was out for a ride and verified the squeal while coming to a complete stop so I changed my procedure. I use both brakes when hauling down from speed then release the front brake at about 10 mph since the squeal only occurs just before coming to rest. No more embarrassment!Clap

When it comes time to replace my pads, I'll try the CRC Disc Brake Quiet and see how it works.

Hey CARUZIN,
(1st post. Sorry if I'm not doing this right)
Have the same issue and we are going to need some help to solve this.
It is the ABS sensor ring. Rub your finger across and match tones with the sound at near stop. We need to find a way to dampen the vibration. Powdercoat maybe?
