motor cycle oil

does any one know if Honda 10 30 motorcycle oil is ok for a Honda 2001 generator?

As long as it is the viscosity required by the manufacturer for the generator you should be okay. There is also a service rating. I would thing the motorcycle oil would be far better than required for that allocation.

For machines of some ages, if you don't have the factory manual by your side, 10/30 May be too thin. I suggest using a thick oil such as 20/50

It should be just fine, but if you want certainty, look up your generator model on Google and compare the oil recommendations with the oil you have. I imagine the service requirements from 2001 have been superceded by newer oils.

the generator is a2200 watt Honda EU2200,I always have 10 30 Honda oil on hand and felt sure it would be fine for the generator, only question is that the oil is labeled motorcycle oil

Try this manual then at pages 50-51, http://cdn.powerequipment.honda.com/pe/p...446010.pdf

Quote:SAE 10W-30, API SJ or later (or equivalent), for general use
The bit I can’t help with but you need to know is whether motorcycle oil is ‘API SJ or later’.

Someone round here, learned in the ways of lubricants, will know.

My bottle of Pro Honda GN4 10W30 bike oil says SJ.

Is actually labeled 10W30 SJ

I also have that Honda generator, and a 3KW Honda gen. The oil for them I have is Honda Power Equipment, SAE 10W30, meets or exceeds API SM standards.

I am no oil expert, but car oils have friction modifiers that can mess up a motorcycle wet clutch. Motorcycle specific oil won’t mess up a wet clutch (like ours). Those generators don’t have clutches. I’d put bike oil in mine if I had too. YMMV.

Hopefully the oil guys will chime in with more info. And just like that I made this an oil thread!!! Smile

I use the same generator and Cormanus's quote is correct.

I suspect standard oil *with* friction modifiers is preferred (car engine oil).

Motorcycle oil without the friction modifiers is more foam resistant and, of course, wet clutch friendly. These attributes are not applicable to the generator.

We have a outside standby Kohler generator 20 KW and this requires Synthetic 5-30 which I change once a year.
