RE: CB1100 Monthly Photo Challenge

I just found the following in an old newspaper article, written as these turbines were about to be place in operation:

"The windmills planted at an elevation of 2,700-2,900 feet, tower 230 feet above the ridge. Each has three blades more than 100 feet in length - close to the height of a 10-story building."

They are astonishingly large. Until you park near them, you cannot appreciate their size. I've seen plenty of them from a distance and been impressed, but today was a whole new experience.

In the spirit of the challenge, I've been hunting windmills in the wild. As we approach the end of the month, I went to the [url=https://windmill.com/]American Windmill Museum here in Lubbock. The largest public collection of restored windmills in the world with around 70 outdoors and 100 indoors.

This for our friends down under. The 25 foot Southern Cross windmill (and another inside) were made in Australia. They were donated by the Navajo Nation in New Mexico because the windmills were too big for them to use.

The Windmill Museum is pretty cool. They even have an windmill for milling grain and, of course, an interesting history.

The first windmill to be built in North America was constructed in 1621 for Sir George Yeardley on his plantation, Flowerdew Hundred, in Virginia. The original windmill was destroyed in a storm, but remains were found in later excavations.

In 1978 a new, commemorative windmill was built at Flowerdew Hundred incorporating features that illustrate the development of English windmill technology through the 18th century. In the summer of 2010 this commemorative mill was moved from Virginia to its current home in Lubbock and is one of the very few working Post-Mills in the Western Hemisphere.

The defining feature is that the whole body of the mill that houses the machinery is mounted on a single vertical post, around which it can be turned to bring the sails into the wind.

Inside, the museum has the collection of Millstones from Flowerdew Hundred. A fascinating subject in itself.

Actually a very apropos quote. I think the Southern Cross windmills are the largest diameter windmills (windpumps) in the collection.

How many times have you ridden past it Suhawk? Most of the ones I have spotted I have ridden past hundreds of times without seeing them.
