After coffee this morning I finally remembered to test the rear brake. Took off from the house, got to about 20mph and just stood on the rear pedal. Locked that sucker up so fast it shocked me. Went down and around the neighborhood. Used just the rear brake at one stop sign coming down from about 30, stopped just fine. Without stomping on the brake I get pretty good braking - for just the rear brake and when combined with the front I get damn good braking. Normally I just use the front for any braking save for low speed turns and near gravel or sand.

So I'm not sure what you all have going against you with your rear brakes but it certainly seems abnormal to me. My guess is you have air in the line and if it keeps coming back it may pay to completely disassemble the rear brake components, put it back together and bleed. Sounds like a fitting is not properly sealing.

My experience exactly, apart from the fact that I was avoiding hitting something rather than "seeing what she can do". The reason I chose organic pads for my rear brakes and sintered for the front was to reduce the chance of unexpected rear wheel lock up. The bike stops well.

Went out on some back country roads today and tested rear brakes approaching stop signs etc. Rear brake slowed the bike without any problems from relatively slow speeds however, I'd hate to have to stop quickly with just the rear....it ain't gonna happen. The front binders are awesome on the CB. Use both front and rear in concert and it will stop the bike fairly quick. Never engaged the ABS.

So it looks like Short Timer, Powerdogg and myself are all less than impressed with our rear brakes. Very interesting.

Well there is a reason for 2 wheels and 3 brake disks. You can't expect one disk to be the same as 3 disks in function?

No. With weight transfer the rear is not going to be a great binder BUT, especially if used with the front, it will haul the bike down in short order. You should be able to lock it up, but that is not advised unless you are also using the front brake otherwise the bike will want to swap ends.

There would be no weight transfer using the rear only. Using the front you would have front end dive and weight transfer, but not when using rear only. Is that not correct?
