A long time ago ( circa '98 / '99), I spoke with a "Shell Answer Man" on a 800 number that Shell advertised, and he explained in excruciating detail, over 45 minutes, that, in summary, if an engine is designed for regular, not only would one be wasting their $ to put in Premium, but most likely also gets worse mileage.

I never used additives until I let an old CB sit with half a tank of gas for a year. Wouldn't run at all after. I ended up putting an inline fuel filter in and started running Seafoam through it. Every three or four tanks I had to change that filter because of all the varnish that came out of that tank. Eventually it cleared up and ran great after that. I have been adding a splash here and there ever since.
As far as octane ratings go the higher octane fuel resists detonation. that is why it doesn't knock in high compression engines. Most engines since the switch to EFI will compensate for knock. In my opinion anything over 10:1 compression you will be better off with 92 or above gas, and there is the added benefit of no ethanol.

I have used Seafoam for over 20 years in all my small engines and I can't say if it helps or not. It surely hasn't hurt! I usually only use it when I run the last tank for storage. For any small carbureted engine, fuel quality is important. I have not had to overhaul a carburetor in 10 years! Was it the Seafoam? probably not. But I only use only Non-Oxygenated gasoline in all my small engines. Ethanol is evil for small engines. It only has a shelf life of about a month. As for octane rating, I would use 87 octane in all my small engines if there was no ethanol in it. Unfortunately, I have to purchase 91-92 octane fuel to stay away from ethanol. For my chain saws and weed whips, I actually us 100LL aviation fuel because it lasts forever!
As for my CB, I run Non-Oxygenated gas when I can, but I don't worry if I have to use 87. I just make sure my last tank has Non-Oxygenated gas in it and a little SeaFoam. It just makes me feel good, and thats all that matters!
