Ha! When we rolled into the Death Valley visitor center, I popped the filter out and banged it against the curb, and checked the car over. Our windshield wasn't too happy about the whole affair. I walked over to the two adventure riders who had stopped there and asked if they were OK. They were shaking sand out of just about everything. And cursing themselves for not turning back, and realizing that they'd have to ride through the same mess on the way out of the park.

When we got home, I ran a comb through our AC condenser to get the sand out of it.

At that point, I decided that we'd be renting for future road trips.

I used to lead riders on the annual Death Valley Dash -- 800 miles in a day, San Diego to DV and back. I've never experienced more miserable riding conditions than the gale force winds that can howl from Baker, CA, up to Furnace Creek. It's absolutely brutal on a bike and makes the ride dangerous and nerve-wracking. Sportster Doc, if you're listening, I imagine you'd agree.

Rode thru Death Valley this June. Well, it was really hot and a real experience. I used my windshield completely pulled out, closed my jacket in front, openend the vents at the back and poored down 1/2 liter of water down the neck inside the jacket every half hour. That worked quite well for me.

I frequently see "real" HD riders cruising down the freeways around here in the winter, wearing only a knit wool cap (no helmet), while the temps are in the 20's. It's actually quite impressive. I'm still a fair weather San Diego wimp myself. Low-40's and dry roads are my limit.

the knit cap is all you see. He really has on heated gear plugged in at 12 volts. LOL!

Be glad you weren't there in late April, Django - wasn't hot, but your bike would have been laying on its side in that photo.
