Ticking / clicking sound after oil change

IIRC we had a member have a chain click due to that. Wheel being cocked and chain made the noise as it went around the sprocket.

Your brief and very succinct sentence turned out to be masterful, Lord Popgun.

The main noise is coming from the chain like you expected. The volume increases with speed (while on centre stand)- so 5th gear tick-over is the worst. There is also a lessor clicking noise coming from the cam shaft cover area (again, volume related to speed) - I suspect that this second, lessor noise is related to the cam chain sound that the garage claimed. It might be that this second sound was there already when I took the bike in. I may get the cam chain replaced if it gets worse.

So, I will take my spanner down there a bit later and hope for the best - the ultimate easy solution, beaten only by the "has it got any gas in it?" answer. My favourite type af answer. Thanks guys.

Another possibility to consider is the heavier weight oil that was previously in the motor had some damping effect on the normal noises this motor makes. There are sources of small clicking sounds even when everything is in tune. Going with 10W-40 is the right call, though, for a hot climate.

You did mention that the noise goes with wheel speed. In a given gear, that would also mean it's going with engine speed.

Do a test... Go somewhere without a lot of traffic, get rolling along and then pull in the clutch and close the throttle. If the noise keeps up, it's something in the transmission, chain, or rear wheel. If the noise goes away, it's in the engine somewhere.

When the forum first started in 2013 there was a lot of discussion about a clicking ticking noise, hear primarily after shifting into second gear and accelerating which we determined to be fuel injectors ticking. Hasn't been any discussion of it in recent years that I recall.

Guth posted this in May 2013, a month after the forum started:

"I've noticed a noise on my bike that I thought could be the valves. It can be heard as a clicking that occurs just as you begin to twist the throttle. After some research, I've come to attribute this to the fuel injection system. This is the first fuel injected bike that I've ridden and I have to admit to not being familiar with such things."

later many came to the same conclusion

another clicking noise was determined to be a dry chain
