RE: CB1100 Monthly Photo Challenge

some facts for those interested: it's a kind of tree called a Live Oak. there are a great many of these growing all over the charleston area, and they're actually protected by law. you need a permit to prune them. some of them are very old and spectacular, but this one is the oldest. the wood from a live oak is outrageously hard, compared to your average tree. it's often compared to iron in terms of its density, and each one of those crazy limbs you see weighs 10s of thousands of pounds. the tree is so large, and so old, and the limbs so big around, that if you look you can see entire ecosystems growing on the topside of the limbs. little baby forests all on their own. it's a bit like the legend of Yggdrasil, the world tree.

CB1100 Tree

The tree in the picture is near the Dooyeedang (Avon River) this was a major transport route for the Gunaikurnai people. Bark canoes were used for fishing and travelling up and down the river between the mountains and the lakes.
Several trees in the nature reserve by the side of the river have scars where a sheet of bark has been removed.
Canoes, shelters, shields, food bowls and infant carriers could all have been made from carefully removed and prepared bark from these trees.

The scarred tree at Howitt Park Bairnsdale is a canoe tree and is protected under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006.
The 4m long scar made when the bark was peeled away can still be seen on the tree. It is believed that this tree is approximately 170 years old.

RE: CB1100 Monthly Photo Challenge

Good month, gang. I went first to get the ball rolling but am not eligible to pick again, two in a row.
Ferret was next, but he picked recently as well, and I am pretty sure he would like to see someone else get a shot. (Correct me if I am wrong, Mr. F).
mtneers seems like the logical winner. I know this is presumptive on my part. EmptySea, Ferret? What do you think?

Ben
