2013 CB1100 MPG
(12-03-2013, 10:21 AM)The ferret_imp Wrote: Well maybe I can get you to figure this higher math for me cause lord knows I don't want to make a laughing stock of myself...

I filled the bike up...drove 142 miles. It hadn't gone to flashing reserve yet. I pulled into a gas station and refilled the tank and it took 2.5 gals to refill

On the very next tank the flashing reserve light came on at 142 miles. I drove and additional 29.4 miles for a total of 171.4 miles and refilled the tank and it took 3.1 gallons to fill.

Both times filled on the sidestand to the same level in the neck of the tank.

So please...you do the math for me and tell me what kind of mileage I am getting.

My bike suffers the exact same symptoms as reported by
ALL the motorcycle mags. One mag even goes into detail
explaining how nutty the fuel gauge acts.
Like before one even hits 100 miles, the bike is flashing red.
My bike does likewise. When I bought the bike I couldn't
believe what that infernal gauge was talking about.I kept thinking
the dealer probably had about a gallon and a half in it.
I took the bike out today for around 20 miles and had the
trip odometer set from the last time I fille it.
The trip odometer read 46 when I started today. It was at the
2nd bar.It went to one bar in about a few miles. It went back a couple times to 2 bars then stayed at one bar the rest of my ride.
Which should have meant it has a solid gallon plus left.
A blinking red flasher means the bike is on reserve and has
.9 gallon left.So explain to me how I have one bar at 52 miles
an am supposed to have according to you another 100 Miles
Plus,left in the tank.
Do not fret y'all. The M109 is almost exactly as bad.
The fuel gauge stays at full and then once it drops down
does so very quickly.meaning the gauge basically does not
calculate when the tank is truly half full.Just full and very
near empty. At least according to the gauge. The entire middle
area of fuel { half a tank } reads very quickly.Which is the
opposite of what you want.

Foolardi please stop the constant trolling will ya? Guth has started something special here and ferret does such a good job helping keep this place civil. Why do you always want to start something? Why? Why all the drivel?

I constantly get above 50mpg on my CB1100 and on a 3100 mile trip, loaded down with camping gear, I went OVER 180 miles on a single tank several times. Those are facts dude, deal with it maybe you can't deal with facts? What gives?

Stop controlling what posters say.You arrogant prig.
I suppose all the Motorcycle mags are making stuff up also.
The fuel gauge on this model does not work correctly.
Neither does my M109.
This is only a motorcycle.Stop acting like such little boys.
You'd a thunk I was talking about one of yer family members,
for cryin out loud.I came here to discuss this model.
BOTH Pro & Con.That is the grown up thing to do.
Corrective criticism is adult-like.

I agree.I need to put myself on ignore and know my place.
Maybe that a way,the fuel gauge might start cooperating a little
more.
Or less.

I see what ferret is saying that higher math where you have a full tank by looking in the tank not using the gauge on the instrument cluster that has been pointed out by some to be faulty from many magazine quotes, then riding a certain amount of miles then filling up again using the same method of ignoring the gauge.

Now in my old school math I would take the miles traveled divided by the fuel used to get the miles per gallon. Maybe the new math has some formula to factor in a gauge that doesn't need to be factored in as we were not discussing the mileage in relation to the bars on the gauge but rather the mileage in relationship to the amount of gas put in the bike...

But I think we all can agree that the gas gauge, and not in relation to the miles per gallon we are getting, leaves a lot to be desired as it varies from bike to bike with how it functions. And the function of the gas gauge has nothing to do with how much we put in the tank and how many miles we ride on those gallons of gas. The gauge is in my opinion just a tool, albeit not a good one for letting us know if we have gas in the tank or not.

Now back to the miles per gallon. Ferret, I travel 107 miles then put in 2.8 gallons of gas filling to the same point in the tank by visually looking in the tank while I fill. Can you help me out with how many miles per gallon I am getting?

107 / 2.8 = 38.214

If the posts on this site (and my own fuel gauge) are any clue, I think you'll find that it isn't anywhere close to being linear. Personally, the only thing useful about the gauge is that the last bar reliably starts flashing with .9 to 1 gallon remaining.

I use the trip meter to estimate how much is left and start looking for fuel about 10-15 miles after the flashing bar.

How did you know when to stop the bike and look inside the
tank and gauge if the spot was relatively the same area where
you filled the last time. Each time you stop and look inside
the tank requires using the key.So either you had yer spare
key available or you had to physically stop the bike and turn
off.
