I have 8000km on my Avons, and tbh they look pretty good with even wear, there is no squaring off nor chipping. I'm changing them because I noticed some small cracks on the sidewall, but I would normally get new rubber every year, and I don't really ride one bike for more than 15k/year, I only ever took out the soul of my Versys 650 and the second Majesty 400, and that's because they were my main commuters.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, if your tires were like that at 20k miles, I have absolutely nothing to worry about because I will likely change them before I hit 10k miles.
