The hiss key has a universal cartridge inside the black plastic cover ( google " id46 " ) which has a very small ferrite rod with a resonant winding and a chip with the code programmed into it.
Once the key is inserted and the ignition switched on the black ring around the key emits a 100khz signal which energizes the chip which responds with a set of "short circuit" pulses which changes the 100 khz transmitter, the code is verified by the receiver ring, communicated to b10 and b11 of the ecu and the ignition is then activated.
I have listened to it with a long wave receiver close by and could hear the short tone burst at switch-on.
On some bikes it is possible to copy up to 3 keys as i recall through a sequence, there is some info about it on the net.
And the hiss led uses a meager amount of energy which stops after 24 hours until the ignition is once again used and the correct key is recognised, the clock also uses power but again this is much smaller than the self-discharge current of the battery so " no worries " as they say over here, good question.
