My understanding is California is doing away with the red sticker registrations next year. For those of you who don't know what a red sticker is, it is an off-road registration sticker required to allow you to ride your non street-legal motorcycle on federal property (dessert, ORV trails). Several years ago they eliminated the "Green sticker" registrations. As soon as they realized the revenue they lost due to vehicle registration fees they created the "Red sticker" registration. The difference between the green and red stickers is with a green sticker registration you can ride your vehicle on federal lands 360 days/year, and with the red sticker registration you are limited to the days you can ride your vehicle on federal lands. Their justification is that some days the climate is more prone to damage by exhaust emissions, so you can't ride on these days. In reality, the red sticker registration was created to allow the state to continue to collect registration fees for all the off road vehicles, while appeasing the global warming advocates.
