A lot of bikes have a gearbox sensor that I think reads output shaft speed.... That could be what he meant. But nowdays with abs so popular and probably becoming mandatory, it makes perfect sense to use the rear wheel abs components for the speedo signal so you don't need another Speedo system. And on a abs bike the wheel speed sensors are part of it so you get a feed to the Speedo for free.
