How does this happen while riding??

My guess would be some kind of flying / bouncing road debris hit it. At highway speeds, it doesn't take much mass to be able to break a bit of plastic.
I've had a few shin bruises in the past few months from hitting debris of some sort (small rocks, I think) while riding down the freeway. |
