I found this when I dismounted at the gas station at the end of my evening commute today.

There is no other damage to the assembly. I am at a loss for words.
Hard to tell by the pic. But looks like the screw in the bottom is still in it? But the whole lens is gone all but the small part screw is in. Wow maybe a flying rock, drive by shooting with a BB gun! You might not ever know
Michael
You don't ride really fast backwards, do you? If not, I'm stumped.
Sh&t happens. Act of god is what insurance will say.

Looks like we use similar motorcycle luggage, eh?

Taken in the Sierras on the way to Oregon last summer, btw.
Any way a strap or something from the luggage could've gotten loose, whipped around in the wind and smacked the lens? I wouldn't think so, but...
Or, if a pebble or other small projectile caught the lower part of the rear rim just right, it could ride the rim almost half way around and be catapulted at the lens. Longshot, but maybe. I'm just spitballin' here.
My guess would be some kind of flying / bouncing road debris hit it. At highway speeds, it doesn't take much mass to be able to break a bit of plastic.
I've had a few shin bruises in the past few months from hitting debris of some sort (small rocks, I think) while riding down the freeway.
A car or truck passing in the opposite direction could easily have tossed a stone with enough velocity to cause this.
Randy, is the indicator stalk bent slightly forward, or is it an illusion?
If not, I'm with redbirds.
Is it possible it happened at work in a parking lot and not picked up until you got gas? There is still a piece in the frame so its not theft.

+1. It doesnt take much to break a lens and I too have been peppered in the last month from small road debris.
