Maybe if I lived in an urban environment, downtown Cinti for example I would have a different attitude. Out where I live it just doesn't seem so necessary. I would hate living in fear all the time.
Maybe I'm too much like your brother Ferret, but I'd say if I didn't have all the security measures then I would be living in fear. I guess it's horses for courses.

Where I live, despite the low crime rate, most everyone carries including me. My wife used her carry pistol to kill a rabid dog that attacked her while taking her morning walk years ago. I can easily understand those that would find this situation strange or even frightening but it is a deeply embedded part of the culture here and looked upon as quite normal. Despite so many walking about armed or maybe because, violent crime is a rarity.
