Unless you're talking years off the bike, I wouldn't sell it.
Just follow the storage procedures (some mentioned here) and store it in a dry place - inside away from the elements if possible.
Outside under a tarp, subject to temperature and moisture fluctuations, is cruel and unusual punishment for such a nice machine.
And above all, don't run the engine. That only builds up moisture and the engine and exhaust system won't get hot enough to burn it off.
Store it properly and let it sit.
All my bikes have to go through this every year from early November until early-mid April.
