It's not at all dangerous if you have the right tool, and auto parts stores rent them (at least they do here).
Barring that, Google either motorcycle suspension or custom suspension with your zipcode. Most metro areas have at least one shop that does bike suspension work. The shop in my area will take the springs off for a few bucks if you bring them in off the bike. And return them when you're ready.
