I wasn't really going for the retro thing or trying to relive fond memories of the past when I chose my CB. UJMs were everywhere and nothing special when I was growing up (in all of those horrible 70s colors). What I wanted was a solid, simple, reliable, great looking, and fun to ride on any occasion bike. I'm tired of plastic so the idea was to avoid that as much as possible. I didn't want something that was defined by a certain lifestyle (think HD...How many Harley riders do you see with a set of Dainese leathers and an Arai helmet, both of which I have and love). I didn't want a huge bike nor a moped. I wanted a bike built to ride sporty (read - not a cruiser) but not a supersport or a hooligan special. I wanted a bike that was not going to be a service nightmare and cost me a fortune just trying to keep it on the street. Just to be clear, I don't have anything against HD, new electronics, Italian exotics, or plastic, they just weren't what I was looking for.
