This was something that was news to me before about 5 or 6 years ago, too, but now about 50%+ of my upshifts are clutchless after 1-2. I only very occasionally downshift this way, and it's usually just as a novelty to see if I can - it just seems like unnecessary, undue pressure on the gearbox to me (though I have no facts to support that, and lots of folks would vehemently disagree). I'm also old school in that I always blip the throttle before downshifts to rev-match anyway, and that only seems to mess up a clutchless downshifts that I've tried.
