I have owned a supersport (Kawasaki zx 6r) and a cruiser (Yamaha vstar 1100) and I agree with you that the rear brake isn't the strongest. But it works for me as I use them to adjust cornering, u turns and stuff. When coming to a complete stop, it usually not an issue.
