I would be surprised if there is a single CB1100 owner on board here who hasn't had a similar experience at least once. I've already had this happen to me numerous times. For example, I stopped by my favorite local mechanic's shop to show them the bike. The owner actually used to work for Honda Racing and was the lead technician for Miguel DuHamel's bikes for a few years. The other mechanic on staff worked at a local Honda shop for over 25 years until they went out of business. They got a kick out of seeing the bike and thought Honda did a really nice job with it. Another customer who was there assumed it was a rare restored vintage model that he had never known about. He had no idea it was a brand new bike.
On the flip side, I've also been approached numerous times by people who have been reading up on the bike, knew exactly what it was and mine was the first they had seen in person. Those are always fun conversations because with most things in life, I would be on the other side of that discussion. I'm not used to being the first kid on the block to own something I lust after, but when it came to this bike, I just had to go for it. I'm so glad that I did. I've been approached a couple of times in the parking structure at my office by people who also ride and wanted to know more about this bike that they had read about and had only seen pictures of until they spotted mine.
One time I stopped by a cool coffee shop/bike shop here in town ([url=http://www.seeseemotorcycles.com/]See See Motor Coffee Co.). This place specializes in custom builds of vintage bikes. One of the guys working at the shop was excited to see the CB1100 and I was interested to hear his impressions. He loved the box frame swingarm along with the brakes as well as a number of visual cues. He was very impressed with the bike as far as how it compared to the other "modern retros". Just before I snapped this photo that day, there was another Hinckley Triumph parked out front. Three modern retros, each owned by somewhat older riders.
