Too funny... - ride4now_imp - 06-23-2013
So, I'm out on my first 'real' ride this morning. Treasure
Island, Fl. south over the Skyway Bridge (is my CB1100
the first one over this bridge??), down into Sarasota, back over
the bridge, through downtown St. Pete and then over to
Jim's Harley Davidson where I do business with my HD.
A guy pulls up on a newer Road King, looks at my CB and
says... Now there's an OLD ONE! Too funny... I told him
it was brand new. He shook his head and road off. Maybe
my Harley Jacket had him confused? This CB is terrific...
all it needs is a windscreen, highway pegs (I'm 6 ft and
need to stretch out a bit), and a luggage rack and it would
be almost perfect. A belt drive instead of the chain would
make it perfect.

I had a similar experience at a coffee shop in LA. I was getting off my bike and the guy on a Ducati Monster parked next to me goes, "Holy crap, how does that thing look so new?" Well, because it only has 100 miles on it!

I would be surprised if there is a single CB1100 owner on board here who hasn't had a similar experience at least once. I've already had this happen to me numerous times. For example, I stopped by my favorite local mechanic's shop to show them the bike. The owner actually used to work for Honda Racing and was the lead technician for Miguel DuHamel's bikes for a few years. The other mechanic on staff worked at a local Honda shop for over 25 years until they went out of business. They got a kick out of seeing the bike and thought Honda did a really nice job with it. Another customer who was there assumed it was a rare restored vintage model that he had never known about. He had no idea it was a brand new bike.
On the flip side, I've also been approached numerous times by people who have been reading up on the bike, knew exactly what it was and mine was the first they had seen in person. Those are always fun conversations because with most things in life, I would be on the other side of that discussion. I'm not used to being the first kid on the block to own something I lust after, but when it came to this bike, I just had to go for it. I'm so glad that I did. I've been approached a couple of times in the parking structure at my office by people who also ride and wanted to know more about this bike that they had read about and had only seen pictures of until they spotted mine.
One time I stopped by a cool coffee shop/bike shop here in town ([url=http://www.seeseemotorcycles.com/]See See Motor Coffee Co.). This place specializes in custom builds of vintage bikes. One of the guys working at the shop was excited to see the CB1100 and I was interested to hear his impressions. He loved the box frame swingarm along with the brakes as well as a number of visual cues. He was very impressed with the bike as far as how it compared to the other "modern retros". Just before I snapped this photo that day, there was another Hinckley Triumph parked out front. Three modern retros, each owned by somewhat older riders.

I ended up having lunch at a local burger spot and pulled up next to a few bikes...one was a '75 Norton and the rest were mostly Harley's. This time, these guys knew exactly what I was riding and immediately came over and wanted to talk about it. I'm with Guth on this.... It is pretty cool having a 'toy' new in its life cycle especially when it evokes such interesting conversation. I think this bike could be a real opportunity for Honda, and perhaps other Japanese brands, to dig into their heritage and build on their past. Lets face it, that's what Harley does so well. How many times have you seen a Harley pull up and you knew exactly what year it was or how old it was? Unless its an older model, or a first year V-Rod, I bet rarely.
I hope the younger generation takes to this bike and Honda and the others can build upon it. Who knows...why not a new CB500, 750, or Kawasaki 900?

I have a couple of old BMW's and my CB draws as much conversation as the vintage bikes do.

I have a black '14 with a slip on and small fairing. K&N black handlebars and a small old original black Rizoma mirror. I was riding home in my neighborhood and the electric company was thinning out tree limbs. As I passed the group, a couple of guys waved and I waved back. When I pulled into my driveway, one of the white service pickups was following me home. The guy gets out and says that he thinks he's never seen such a great looking resto. He was a Harley rider. I fessed up and he was dumbstruck. The guy LOVED the bike. We talked for awhile and he left smiling. Looks like Honda sold another one.

Hope it wasn't windy when you rode on the bridge. I've been over that bridge in a car. It is pretty impressive.
