Hi kballowe, I bought my DLX last Jan, and had the same dilemma as you. After much reading on this forum, I found that a "Jardine Universal Tall Billet" sissy bar seemed like a worthwhile investment. I also bought the OEM rear carrier. What's nice about the Jardine is that the span between the vertical members is somewhat adjustable, and the vertical members are already drilled and threaded for M10 bolts. That meant that all I had to do was locate two spots on the carrier where I could drill thru holes to attach the sissy bar. That part was a little scary, but I bought some carbide bits from my local Ace hardware store, and it all went quite well. Unfortunately, I've not figured out how to post photos on the forum, but if you're really interested, PM me with your e-mail and I can send a few pics of the final product. I'm away from home for the month of Dec, and can't get to the bike to give you any close-ups right now, but could do so in early Dec. If you're willing to invest in the OEM rack, ~$250, and the Jardine backrest, ~$200, I think you'd be happy with the end result. It's very, very sturdy, and looks like it belongs on the bike.
