I am not sure that the little trout streams in SW Wisconsin would be of your liking, but that's where I fish (when I fish, which has been several years) and they are about as far away from Chicago as Springfield is, but in the opposite direction. Salmon and Steelhead come out of Lake Michigan when the weather gets cold, but that doesn't coordinate with riding, really.
I'm not a good fisherman. I enjoy it a lot, but I rarely catch anything. You'll want to set up far away from my trout-spooking throws. LOL
I have this daydream of packing quick-dry pants, wading shoes, my rod and a small fly box (or a lanyard) on my bike and stopping streamside to fish. Minimalist flyfishing. Would be extra cool if there were two bikes streamside.
Oh... and Miles City, MT, along the Yellowstone River, is almost exactly halfway between Portland and Chicago. About 1100 miles.
