I had a 78 GL and agree with this assessment.
I did a retro tour last august, on my CB 1100. It was 1400 miles over 6 days. The only equipment I used was my duffel bag on the backseat. It was fun. But there were several days in the trip I only rode 200 miles. I did one 350 mile day. It was a fun trip.
You can certainly ride a CB across the country, I'm just saying there are better options. Take a look at the Suzuki Bandits, or the Honda African Twin series, if you desire a lightweight bike for touring.
