I would recommend a size up. I wear a 34 waist in Wranglers which has plenty of room and the 34 I got in the firehose jeans was too tight to fit on my best day. Granted that's not the exact model of jeans you are talking about, but I am assuming they use the same sizing. I agree that the material seemed very stout.
I've pretty much given up on finding anything like that for riding and am instead investigating some of the "armor" you can wear under normal jeans. I tried on some of the kevlar draggin jeans with pads in the knees and it just looks too wierd and doesn't feel right. If I was going to go with full protection I'd just get some actual leathers or textiles with the armor built in. chaps just don't look quite right on this bike, but maybe some textile chaps? Don't know. Still looking.
