As I kid I shot skeet and trap without ear protection, used lawn mowing equipment without ear protection, and worked in a wood shop with my dad without ear protection. As a teenager, I listened to music too loud without ear protection.
Somehow as an adult in my 20s I wised up. I have been using ear protection religiously ever since. I even wear earplugs when using a vacuum cleaner or turning on the air compressor in the garage.
I started street riding in 2012 at the age of 49. I was not prepared for the wind noise. I had ridden offroad for six years prior and took the MSF class, but my first foray onto the street scared the daylights out of me. I went two miles, turned around and came back home. I was surprised how nervous and edgy I was. Then I realized it was the noise level. I inserted ear plugs and went back out. Wow. Huge difference. The lack of extreme noise made me ride more calmly and I could hear myself think.
I used to wear the foam plugs. I would buy the premium -33dB from Amazon.
Christmas 2015 I got a pair of [url=https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/nonoise-motorsport-noise-filter-ear-protection]NoNoise Motorsports plugs. They have a ceramic acoustic filter. Noise above a certain level creates turbulence in the filter, and cuts it off. But normal sounds like speech come through pretty well (I won't lie and say perfectly).
