I rode to work for many years, including winter if no snow and ice. The Gerbing's jacket liner and heated gloves were the mainstay of my defense against cold (along with a BMW K75RT, best cold-weather bike I've ever encountered). I rode 17 miles each way in weather as cold as 3°F and cold hands were never an impediment with this setup (at that temperature I used heated pants liners and insoles as well; only used those below about 15°F). Below about 10°F the biggest problem was my breath freezing on the OUTSIDE of the helmet faceshield.
So my experience with various methods of keeping hands warm is that the Gerbing's gloves (with their controller, of course, not an on/off switch) work best. It's important to keep core temperature up to ensure good circulation into the arms and hands, so the jacket liner is essential, IMO.
Plugging into the bike was never any issue with me; being cold on a motorcycle makes it not fun any more.
