When the US demanded passports from Canadians to enter their country, Canada eventually had to fall in line and now we have to show our passports to get back into Canada.
Border crossings are pretty painless and should only delay you a few minutes - providing you don't have to wait in line for a long time. That's where the delays come in. The actual questioning by the border guards is pretty routine. I've been back and forth many times and have never had a problem with either side.
As for speed limits, there is no 55 mph speed limit on Canadian roads. However, the speed limits do vary according to the road you're on. On high speed four-lane roads the limit is generally 110 kph (69 mph). On secondary and rural roads it would be much lower depending on location, conditions, population, etc., - just like in the US.
Highway signs, etc., are pretty standardized in both countries so Americans shouldn't feel out of place here - except for the metric system
If the speed limit sign reads 90kph, just multiply the 9 by 6 = 54mph.
After all these years the cops won't buy, "Sorry officer, I don't know the metric system and didn't know how fast I was going."
But unless you're really tearing up the roads you'll probably only get a warning if the cop is in a good mood.
