The perspective was mostly taken from going down mountain highway/regional roads at speed, carving the downward bends as a rider would normally experience, then suddenly having the next set of curves turn into gravel road. Construction signs? What signs? Maybe the odd sun faded and wind torn orange flag back a few hundred feet? In some cases the tires would sink into the gravel if a certain speed was not maintained. Add to that lane splitting in these turns, otherwise you'll end up somewhere where you don't want to be.

In any case, understood. Situations can raise the hair on the back of the neck.
I've never been to central or south America, so I'll take your word for it until I go, but yes I can believe that. I've been to many a road in this condition in southeast Europe, nothing as steep though
