Help me out on this one gents. Besides the aesthetic appeal to this accessory, does it have a function? Is it thought to provide some protection to the tank? If so, why is it so small? IOW's, why would Honda design and sell a "protective" accessory that only covers a small portion / area on the top of the tank?

Sorry for such a basic question, but everytime I see this particular accessory, I wonder if it is aesthetics only --or-- it is believed to have protective qualities.

What am I missing here guys?
