Actually, I'm with Tortuga on this one. I think the question was, "what is this for?" - which went unanswered. I was also confused.
IIRC there is some fitting or plate or something that goes over the air intake that CIP removed and sealed a gap or whatever with the tape he mentions. No purpose for the mod is directly stated, no before pic is offered, no description or pic of the tape package is given.
Now is the part where I go put my flame retardant suit on.

My apologizes for thinking everyone should know what an air box mod in tales. You take the cover off the air box omit it and run with just the air cleaner showing to let more air into the motor. When you do this the air cleaner need support so it does not fall out. There is a company in Japan that makes a cover for this purpose but it cost 100 bucks. Not to have to wait i created my own air box mod which is shown in post 1. which actual works real well. This should address all your question.
