Just to add to the great Australian helmet modification saga, all bar one jurisdiction has now approved the use of helmets complying with AS/NZS1698 and the relevant European standard. Helmet importers say they won't import European approved helmets until all jurisdictions have approved them, but all the big states are now in, so I suspect it won't be long before we have a bit more choice.

I have a recollection (which could well be wrong) that the prohibition on modification is actually contained in the standard, which is part of the appalling racket that's been created by governments giving into the big business lobby and mandating standards in legislation. It is certainly not contained in the Queensland legislation.

Police in Victoria and NSW have been particularly enthusiastic about booking motorcyclists with camera mounts on their helmets; I read recently that a magistrate in Victoria had thrown out a prosecution on the basis that the laws were too difficult for the public to access. She or he did not address the legality of modifying helmets. There has yet to be a judgment on that question.

It will be hard to stop the enthusiasm for bike mounted cameras now they've become relatively cheap and widely available. It will also be hard to stop people sticking them to their helmets. At some point, I suspect someone will do some serious research on what is likely to happen to a person in an accident when they have a camera stuck to their helmet.
