Sorry to bring up an old thread. I notice my CB front sprocket can still turn about 1 to 2 tooth position after I engage the gear (stationary with engine stop). I am wondering if this freeplay is what Max explain here, by design, or I had damage the gear. Sometimes when I upshift on the higher rev range I kind of miss it and end up in a kind of false neutral before the gear suddenly engage in a violence way (either up or drop back) with loud grinding and banging sound. The 60mm freeplay Max explained here, is it the distance the chain can travel front and back when gear are engage with a stop engine?

The chain has 5mm. play, that is about 10% of the total.
The chain tension is a conservative 40mm. between top and bottom movement.
As a reference the 40 year old cb550 measures 50 mm play when in first or second gear, so not much change there.
And Jim is exactly right, it shifts fine clutchless, when slowing down i apply a small amount of pressure on the gearlever, reduce throttle until it shifts down etc.
