If you want something fun, bulletproof, and cheap... Drz400.... I still miss mine, and I had the 3x3 mods, and fcr39 carb... I sold it in favor of a stupid fast 625ktm for track days..Wish I had kept the drz.. While not as much power, it was bulletproof...
I have been reading up on the KLX250 and know it is limited in the power department, but that it responds well to a pipe, rejetting, and air box mods. So, for around $350, I can make the KLX a bit livelier. From what I understand, the DRZ is a bit of a dog in stock trim and an uncorked KLX is nearly as quick, albeit you have to rev the crap out of it. Similarly, the basic mods you do to the KLX will wake up the DRZ.
Where the proposition of the DRZ falls apart for me is that they are somewhat more expensive. The cheapest I have seen is $4000 for a reasonably clean, unmolested example. For that money, I'll get a KLR and just be done with it. Also, I don't feel comfortable buying something with a ton of engine mods because I question the reliability of big bore kits, hotter cams, and ignition mods that remove the rev limiter.
I am able to buy this KLX for $2600 and it has less thank 4k miles and it all stock. I feel comfortable that I could always get most of my money back out of it if I don't go crazy with mods.
