I want one more motorcycle...maybe a supermoto - the_undecider_imp - 11-23-2014

Problem is, I can't afford the KLR and the Grom is really pretty useless, so I found what might be the bastards child of the two:
Realistically, the Grom is just a toy...modern day, street legal monkey bike. You also have to spend about a grand extra to make the suspension handle a 200 lb rider. Then, you are limited to a top speed of around 60 mph and a bike not legal for the freeway.
The KLR is a jack of all trades bike and it is comfortable for day long rides and allows you to go anywhere. I had a 1991 KLR and I still regret selling it. I would enjoy a new one, but don't want to pay new money for one when I know I could find a nice used one with farkles for $3k.
I fully realize that my lack of patience and a propensity for being impulsive often lead me astray. I found a 2009 Kawasaki KLX250SF for a price that makes it hard to pass up. I almost took it home yesterday, but I wanted to sleep on it. After doing so, I still want it. I figured that I can get my money back out of the bike if I decide it isn't right. It'll run fast enough for short runs on the highway and can handle a dirt road. It's also a ton of fun to hoon the snot out of a low powered bike without much worry of breaking the speed limit. Everybody needs a hooligan bike, right?

The klx250 is too under powered as a hooligan..... It's a light fun bike off-road, but on the slab, you will,feel the strain....
If you want something fun, bulletproof, and cheap... Drz400.... I still miss mine, and I had the 3x3 mods, and fcr39 carb... I sold it in favor of a stupid fast 625ktm for track days..Wish I had kept the drz.. While not as much power, it was bulletproof...

My wife had a KLX for a time but quickly grew tired of it. Lackluster power and a seat that's good for about 20 miles. She stopped riding it so it was sold.

I have been reading up on the KLX250 and know it is limited in the power department, but that it responds well to a pipe, rejetting, and air box mods. So, for around $350, I can make the KLX a bit livelier. From what I understand, the DRZ is a bit of a dog in stock trim and an uncorked KLX is nearly as quick, albeit you have to rev the crap out of it. Similarly, the basic mods you do to the KLX will wake up the DRZ.
Where the proposition of the DRZ falls apart for me is that they are somewhat more expensive. The cheapest I have seen is $4000 for a reasonably clean, unmolested example. For that money, I'll get a KLR and just be done with it. Also, I don't feel comfortable buying something with a ton of engine mods because I question the reliability of big bore kits, hotter cams, and ignition mods that remove the rev limiter.
I am able to buy this KLX for $2600 and it has less thank 4k miles and it all stock. I feel comfortable that I could always get most of my money back out of it if I don't go crazy with mods.

I kid you not, you can find a good shape drz for a lot less than 4k... I sold mine a 05, w/ lots of mods, in 09 for 4 even. There is one, or at least was one on advrider, for 2k, with extra 800 for an wheels..
The drz s/sm in stock form is a bit neutered.. However, it's predictable and useable. To uncork it, it doesn't require a big bore kit.. If you open the air box, put an exhaust on it and replace the cv carb with a flatslide fcr39 carb, it gives you a hp boost, but more importantly much crisper throttle response. While a carb swap sounds complicated, it's documented as the fcr39 is what comes on the drz-e.. The e is the same bike with a different carb and crank... Swapping the carb is a standard easy deal which gives you a serious improvements.. When you do it, you get a street hooligan bike.. Lots of fun, useable power, and it can do the slab to get you home..
Only reason I got rid of mine was the local track put in a go kart/am track and I got eaten by race based sm's...
The klx is a good bike.. However, the bulk of your buyers will be folks looking for an entry level bike... It might not be as easy to sell as you think.
Before you buy, checkout advrider, thumpertalk for pros/cons...

Motorcycle prices in my market are elevated compared to others because of the year around riding season and no shortage of college kids. Because of that, I am not worried about finding entry level riders.
Right now, there are 2 DRZs on Craigslist, both asking $4000.
In checking out ADV Rider, Thumpertalk, and Kawi forums, seems most folks are generally happy with basic mods, though a big bore kit seems to really wake up the bike.
I dunno, but I sort of consider the KLX a cheaper, also more powerful, alternative to the Grom.

I'm biased as I own the XR650L, with two sets of rims, one with knobbies, one with dual sport tires. Weighs about 80-100lbs less than the KLR 650, does not have a chain driven counter balancer (really? seems to me a gear driven one would have been the way to go). Better in the dirt than the KLR, not too shabby on the slab; but the mileage ain't nothin' to write about.
I added an oil cooler (this is AZ after all), wolfman side racks, 5.8gal gas tank, real bark busters, and some armour on the side cases. Kinda of a step child in my kit now, but is so fun in the twisty bits, I still envision some touring on it.
It does not get the love of the KLR; perhaps if I rode a KLR I'd see why. But I can't get over all that extra weight.
By the way, a buddy has a GROM and has been putting stupid money into to get it to perform like a 350 (or 250). But he's a bit shorter and has a blast on the darn thing as well as getting a ton of ribbing from me.
I do admit it would be fun to have if I didn't have the 650L already. But I think a real 250 would make more sense. Especially with my 36"+ inseam.

I must be the only guy on the planet that doesn't get the Grom. other than playing on a go cart track, I really see no use for it.

Los Angels lane splitting and parking for one. Yeah, you could get a little scooter, but I'd rather be on a mini motorcycle. Plus it would be great to teach all my non riding friends to ride, I'll bet a couple of them would catch the bug if they had something unintimidating to learn on.
