New bike or not , always good to see, look and learn and gain from experience on what to get involved on or not and in the worst case scenario you still learn something new .. hope you find another one to your liking ..
As for the linked brakes, I also used to own a 1986 1200 interstate and while trying to diagnose the rear brake drag, in my particular situation, it was actually one of the front rt or left caliper that was jammed up. Something about how the front /rear brake distribution worked and I did eventually get everything to work. I just never took a liking to the full dresser so sold the interstate and kept the much lighter and agile 1100 standard.
