Why try and change what they created?
I think you will find that Petroleum based oils now contain just as many, if not more additives than some synthetic oils. Conventional oil must be significantly refined to compensate for the variance in the long-chain molecule size created in nature and the additives make up the difference to standardize performance.
The truly synthetic esters (like those in Amsoil), on the other hand, generally (but not in all cases) tend to provide a "purer" base with consistently sized molecules. As a result, fewer additives are required for similar performance and longevity without shearing.
