I might have a plausible explanation.
If you look in the service manual for the '14, in the Fuel System section there is a wiring diagram for the PGM-FI.
First notice that there is a serial data line from the ECM to the Combination meter (this is not present in the 2013 models). It is labeled M-TXD/RXD which would seem to indicate it is a transmit/receive data line (bi-directional)
In the Meter section of the book the line is mentioned and a connector for it is in the headlight shell.
Looking at the diagram, when you activate the Kill Switch (Engine Stop Switch), The Engine Stop Relay de-energizes and removes 12V from the Fuel Cut-Off Relay which de-energizes and removes power from the fuel pump--not part of this discussion.
But, 12v is also removed from the ECM in 2 places (and from a number of other componets). Based on what you say happens, I would think that when you put the Kill Switch in the Kill position, the ECM loses power and communication with the Meter stops. And when you put the Kill switch in the run position, the ECM powers back up and re-establishes communication with the Meter.
There is no theory explanation of this in the manual, I'm making my best guess based on the diagrams and your observations.
If I had a '14, being the inquisitive sort, I'd disconnect the serial data connector in the headlight shell and see the effects. Thats the tech in me
Looking at the '13 and '14 Fuel System diagrams, there are a few interesting changes in ECM wiring. Most related to the meter operation.
I don't have a service manual at this time, but I think you explained what was happening with the kill switch. A lot of owners don't under stand the system, (including dealers and Honda Rep.) which clauses a lot of confusion. I just learned to return the kill switch to the run position if I want to check fuel mileage or gallons used. Total miles can be viewed no matter where the kill switch is position. Thanks for taking the time to research all that information.
Any day you can get vertical and ride your bike is a good day.
