I use a long rubber coated cable bicycle lock that I pass through the chin bars (until recently my wife was usually with me) and secure to either the luggage rack (if attached) or more commonly the handlebar as this enables me to prop each helmet on the mirrors.

This has been my method since '03 and haven't lost a helmet yet.
