I’m confused. California is making you buy a state issued sticker to ride on FEDERALLY owned land?

Yes, they have been doing this for years. "Legally", you cannot even tow your non-registered dirt bike in a trailer on a public road - I am NOT making this up!

It won't be long before we're forced to ride electric motorcycles either.

... or nobody will be forced. The number of available gasoline stations will slowly be diminished.

For those of you who don't know what a red sticker is, it is an off-road registration sticker required to allow you to ride your non street-legal motorcycle on federal property (dessert, ORV trails). Several years ago they eliminated the "Green sticker" registrations. As soon as they realized the revenue they lost due to vehicle registration fees they created the "Red sticker" registration. The difference between the green and red stickers is with a green sticker registration you can ride your vehicle on federal lands 360 days/year, and with the red sticker registration you are limited to the days you can ride your vehicle on federal lands. Their justification is that some days the climate is more prone to damage by exhaust emissions, so you can't ride on these days. In reality, the red sticker registration was created to allow the state to continue to collect registration fees for all the off road vehicles, while appeasing the global warming advocates.

Dave, my interest is surely motorcycles and not climate change (on this forum). But your assessment bares any logic, and your referring to "global warming advocates" is a stark useless political statement.

Interesting article. Currently, California motorcycles do not undergo any emissions testing, likely because there is no current testing infrastructure, and not enough vehicles to warrant it. For one, it would require a separate smaller dyno. One that would have to accommodate between 15 and 200hp. And semi-knobby tires, and trikes, and sidecars fit on the dyno.

On-board diagnostics are fairly recent on motorcycles, and there has been no standard interface, so it will be a while before anything happens.

I didn't see lawnmowers on the exemption list. Big Grin

I would guess that OEM’s will start selling a lot more à la carte ECU’s. Riders can keep a factory tuned ECU for the smog check and and a modified ECU for the remaining 364 days of the year.
